In honor of my little sis, my friends, and all of the coaches’ wives out there, I thought you all deserved a little shout out for what you endure for your honeys. I’m sure if I asked them, they would all agree that they couldn’t do it without you!
Ode to the Football Widow
I could not have imagined the chaos that is now my life,
The day I became a coach’s wife.
I like football, don’t get me wrong,
But our romance no longer resembles a love song.
It all begins with two-a-days late summer.
I know it’s coming, but still, it’s a bummer.
My hubby goes in to football mode.
I prepare for away games, on the road.
I am suddenly forced to parent alone.
Just thinking about it makes me groan.
As much time as he passionately invests,
I’m thinking, this year, we’ll be the best.
I get all decked out in our team colors and cheer,
Disguising my anxiety, nervousness and fear.
I try to watch each and every play,
But I’m also watching my kids, so they’re not in the way.
As the weeks go by and the season wears on,
I start to get used to him being gone.
I want it to last, cause that means they’re winning.
And in football mode, you want him grinning.
Sometimes I struggle with the void in our lives.
Thank the Lord for the other wives!
We’re there for each other, and when someone needs us,
We come to the rescue with chocolate and ‘ritas.
Win or lose, when the season is over,
I’m always there with a welcoming shoulder.
We will survive another season then football will be over.
I look forward to some time to recover.
The joy is short-lived, I hate to report,
Cause if you’re hubby’s like mine, he coaches another sport.

Because several have asked….yes I wrote this poem. It’s for my little sis. Don’t know how you wives do it!!
Thank you for writing this poem for your sister and other coach’s wives. You summed it up perfectly.

Coach’s wife (football, wrestling, and baseball)
Thanks Dixie! Bless your heart!! Hope you have a good season….errr…..seasons
Robin, You are the best. I love this poem. As the girlfriend of a coach for her first football season, I am feeling a bit anxious….
Hang in there Manda! Glad you liked it
I cannot get over how this poem sums up my life! I have been a football wife for over 16 years, and it never gets easier. However, I wouldn’t change a thing!
Thank you for the insight into the real life struggles of a coach’s wife…you hit the nail on the head…my kids and I missed my husband so much that we practically set up camp at the field house…I even travel with the travel as head aquatic engineer….lol! Like you said, the things we do for our “honeys”….smile
This poem is ALL TOO TRUE. My daughter is a football wife and I am a football Mom-In-Law. A good coach ALWAYS has a good wife behind him.
What an awesome poem! I can’t wait to forward this to all my fellow coaches wives. So many people don’t understand how our lives revolve around sports, ours is college football we have been coaching for 13yrs now. And I wouldn’t trade one minute of it even after 7 moves. Thanks goodness for what we call our “football family” we always have eachother to lean on when our hubbys are coaching! Amy Farmer
Please email me a copy of the Ode to a Football Widow!
Wow, your poem is adorable, charming, and sooooooo true! My daughter is also the wife of a high school football coach! He loves it, she loves it and my husband and I love it! We wear the team colors with pride & cheer loudly… each year thinking this is gonna be the year we make it to State! Thanks so much as it’s so easy to see… you too, have written your poem with love! Thanks again… and good luck this season too!

Awww…..thanks ladies!!! So glad you stopped by
This is so true! We’ve been married a little less than a year so I’m still settling in to the “coach’s widow” routine. I gotta say, it sucks!! I’m so proud of what my husband does and who he is in the community, but its also hard only having him home 2 nights out of the week. At least now it’s only baseball, thank goodness basketball is done haha!
